Discussion board threading in reverse chronological order

Your threading view should be set up as the following:

Columns:

  • Threaded(threading)

Sort:

  • First sort by: Threading -> Show items in descending order
  • Then sort by: Created -> Show items in descending order
  • Uncheck “Sort only by specified criteria”

Folders:

  • Show all items without folders
  • Show this view: In folders of content type “Discussion”

This setup worked for me.

Note: Do NOT change the Folder Option: Show in this view to “In all folders” or “In the top-folder level” because it will throw an error when using discussion boards of type:

Attempted to use an object that has ceased to exist. (Exception from HRESULT:
0x80030102 (STG_E_REVERTED))

  1. I’m trying to reverse this – ie have the most recent post at the top – is there anything we can do to change this?

  2. This is good information. I work in SharePoint 2013 and repeated the steps as you listed, but could not achieve the result. My view ends up not being threaded. For a discussion, if I have 2 replies, then my view list them as:
    Discussion
1 -> clicking on this I can read the actual reply
2 -> clicking on this I can read the actual reply

Is threaded view support out of the box or should I customize the template?
